Los Angeles Dodgers History in the Koufax Era

On May 17, 1965, Sweet Lou Johnson took over the left-field position for the Los Angeles Dodgers filling the void caused by a catastrophic season-ending injury suffered by Tommy Davis on May 1. Sandy Koufax would later say, “The 1965 season came to an end for us on May 1.” But Johnson stabilized the position, ending a chaotic six-player revolving door situation. His spirit and clutch play were essential to the Dodgers’ World Championship success in 1965.
The story of Lou Johnson’s contribution is told in Koufax Throws a Curve: The Los Angeles Dodgers at the End of an Era, 1964-1966 McFarland & Company, Inc.
