On June 5, 1959 Maury Wills, a switch-hitting 26-year-old journeyman minor leaguer struggling to support a wife and five children, joined the Los Angeles Dodgers on the road in Milwaukee. The next day Wills made his debut at shortstop at County Stadium thus culminating a nine-year struggle to make it to the major leagues. Wills and fiery fan-favorite Don Zimmer began a fight for the shortstop position that lasted until the 4th of July when Wills took over for good. Maury Wills went on to lead the underdog 1959 Los Angeles Dodgers to their first World Championship on the West Coast. His prodigious base stealing would change the game of baseball.
The story of the 1959 Los Angeles Dodgers is told in the book, Bums No More.
